The shops in Newton Abbot are excellent, but it is best known for colourful markets including the buzzing Pannier Market, twice weekly open-air markets, and the important Wednesday livestock market. Bargain hunters also revel in car boot sales in the livestock market car park, and monthly antiques and collectables fairs held on the racecourse, while nearby Trago Mills is one of the biggest discount outlets in the West Country.
However, tear yourself away from shopping as Newton Abbot has many interesting buildings such as Elizabethan Old Forde House owned by Teignbridge District Council visited by Charles I and Thomas Fairfax, the 13th c. St. Leonard's Tower where William of Orange's Declaration was proclaimed in 1688, and the Newton Abbot Town and Great Western Railway Museum where you will find a marvellously detailed GWR room complete with working signal box.
Romantic medieval Bradley Manor (NT) is surrounded by leafy woodland walks, while other green spaces to enjoy include the peaceful nature reserves of Aller Brook and Jetty Marsh, and the extensive woodland walks and lake of Decoy Country Park. A little further afield, Stover Country Park has 114 acres of woodland, heathland, lake, and marsh to explore, including a section of the Templer Way, an 18 mile walk tracing the route of granite quarried from Hay Tor to Stover Canal, and eventually to Teignmouth.
Plant enthusiasts will enjoy admiring rare and exotic orchids at award-winning Orchid Paradise at Burnham Nurseries, while the gardens of Plant World are laid out to represent the five continents with an exciting collection of plants from all around the globe. For younger family members, a trip to Prickly Ball Farm and Hedgehog Hospital to visit cute rescued hedgehogs and many other animals will prove irresistible.
