Dominated by the rugged red sandstone Ness (from the French "nez" for nose), the sea is pivotal to Teignmouth life, both in its rĂ´le as a seaside town with a much photographed Victorian Grand Pier, and as busy harbour and port, thronged with boats of every description from fishing boats to large cargo vessels.
Experiencing life on, or even under, the water is a must. Scenic cruises travel to Brixham, Dartmouth, along the River Teign, and around the bay, or you can hire your own boat. Deep sea fishing or mackerel fishing trips also operate, plus diving trips for the more adventurous to explore amazing wrecks and reefs, while in August the town hosts the exuberant Teignmouth Regatta.
The town's maze of interesting winding streets is packed with small shops and galleries with a maritime flavour, while as you would expect Teignmouth menus revolve around delicious seafood. As well as inspirational cuisine, both Teignmouth and neighbouring Shaldon have a lively music scene, and each year the annual Teignmouth Jazz Festival strengthens its reputation as a friendly festival hosting some of the best jazz in the county.
As well as the sea, families enjoy The Den's large public recreation area with play areas, crazy golf, and tennis courts, while at the far end is the Carlton Theatre. Nearby Teignmouth & Shaldon Museum tells fascinating stories of the town's nautical past ranging from the Armada and Nelson's fleet to Newfoundland fishing expeditions, shipwrecks, and smuggling forays.
On the opposite bank of the Teign, reached via foot-bridge or the historic Teign Ferry, lies picturesque Shaldon. Here you will find delightful Ness Beach accessed via the Smugglers Tunnel, a variety of unusual animals at Shaldon Wildlife Trust, and stunning exotic plants at the delightful Botanical Gardens. Shaldon's 1785 Day takes place every Wednesday from May to September with period costume, colourful stalls, and evening entertainment.
