Okehampton's lords, with their lavish lifestyle, towered over the local citizens just as their castle keep towered over the surrounding countryside. Today, although ruined, the gravity defying keep still stands tall surrounded by woodland and with the river running past. Now a tranquil and peaceful surrounding for a building steeped in history which you can explore from April to September. A history brought to life with our audio tour, following the life and times of the aristocratic Courtenay family. Henry, Marquis of Exeter was found guilty of conspiracy and was executed by order of King Henry VIII, is it his ghost that allegedly still walks the walls? Or picnic by the river and enjoy the pretty woodlands, awash with wild flowers and bluebells in the spring.
